Ministry warns on liquor in New Year baskets, ads

Department store and supermarket owners have been told not to include liquor products in New Year gift baskets. Those violating the alcohol control law will face fines of up to Bt500,000 and imprisonment for one year, the Public Health Ministry warned yesterday.

Shop owners are also prohibited from prominently displaying, decorating and advertising liquor products in department stores and shops, said Public Health Minister Witthaya Kaewparadai.

"You will face a fine and imprisonment if the ministry finds you have put liquor products in gift baskets for sale during this New Year festivities," he warned business proprietors.

Happy rest stops at 22 gas stations around country

People who get tired while driving over the New Year period are being urged to stop at "Happy" check-stops set up by the Public Health Ministry to get a massage and relax before continuing their travel.

"We want to reduce the number of road accidents during the New Year festivities caused by sleeping and being exhausted while driving car," new Health Minister Witthaya Kaewparadai said yesterday.

People lose concentration after driving for more than two hours and this doubled the risk of road accidents. So drivers should stop for a while and relax....

Australian jailed for people trafficking two Thai women

Sydney - A 48-year-old Australian hairdresser, Keith William Dobie, from the Gold Coast, was sentenced to five years in prison in the Brisbane District Court Tuesday for people trafficking.

Police believe he is the first person to be sentenced for the crime in Australia, ABC Radio reported.

 Dobie pleaded guilty to luring two Thai women to work as prostitutes in Australia. The court was told the women were aware of the nature of their jobs, but were deceived about the hours they would work and were not paid the full amount they were promised.

Stem-cell therapies 'unproven and giving Thailand a bad name'

The international scientific community has condemned some clinics and private hospitals in Thailand for promoting stem-cell therapy for medical tourism and exploiting patients' hopes by purporting to offer effective therapies for seriously ill patients without credible evidence, a cell therapy expert has said.

"This damages the country's reputation. It will be an obstacle for scientists and researchers who conduct stem-cell studies and comply with the law," said Dr Niphan Isarasena of Chulalongkorn University's Stem Cell and Cell Therapy Unit.

Envoys taken on Sukhothai Tour in bid to improve image

The Culture Ministry yesterday took foreign diplomats from 34 countries and foreign media staff on a visit to the Sukhothai and Sri Satchanalai World Heritage Historical Parks to restore Thailand's good reputation, scarred by political turmoil.

Permanent Secretary for Culture Weera Rojpojanarat said that it was urgent for the ministry to restore the country's good image, buffeted by the economic and political crises, and to attract tourists back to Thailand as soon as possible.

Govt to aim at building mass support in quelling southern violence

Violence in the Deep South has the economic, cultural and education dimensions which are beyond the measures being carried out by the military and the police, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said in an interview with Channel 7.

The government intends to fill in the gap left out by the peace-keeping forces, Abhisit said.

He said he will designate the agency to ensure justice and strategic coordination prevailing over the strife-torn areas.

The unrest will not end unless the government can win the mass support and this can be achieved by bringing about sustainable development with due respects to the identity,....

Singapore employer ordered to pay Bangladeshi workers

Singapore - Singapore's Manpower Ministry ordered a local company to settle all outstanding wages of 180 Bangladeshi construction workers who have been left out of work, and at times without meals and proper living facilities, news reports said Tuesday.

The ministry has directed Tipper Corp to pay the workers within the next two weeks, the Straits Times reported, citing the company's spokesman.

 The ministry has also told Tipper that the workers would either be repatriated or transferred to other employers. Tipper has been under investigation for illegal deployment of foreign workers, as well as for the failure to pay salaries to....

Ideas abound as governor race draws down

Popular actor Yuranan "Sam" Pamornmontri wooed city voters by a garbage-tackling policy that would have scavenger trucks collect recyclable items at their doorsteps. While his competitor Former Assets Scrutiny Committee member Kaewsan Atibodhi vowed to put weekend markets in order.

Yuranan, who contested the Bangkok gubernatorial race under the Pheu Thai Party, said Bangkok on a daily basis produced 10,000 tonnes of garbage, 30 per cent of which could be recycled. However, much of it is disposed without recycling at open-air dumps, causing foul smells and unhygienic conditions for nearby areas, he said.

Malaysian man swims to safety after being shot by Thai gunmen

Kuala Lumpur - A Malaysian man who was shot several times at a riverbank on the northern Malaysian-Thai border, managed to swim to safety to the Malaysian side of the river despite his serious injuries, a news report said Monday.

Mohamad Darus Mohamad Daud, 37, who suffered gunshot wounds to his abdomen, buttocks, left wrist and right leg, was found by villagers in the northern Malaysian Terengganu state and rushed to a nearby hospital.

 The victim was believed to have been approached by three men in southern Thailand on Sunday and taken away in their vehicle to a riverbank and assaulted, state police chief....

Indonesia urges EU to lift ban on Jakarta airliners

Jakarta - Indonesia has called on the European Union to lift its ban on the country's carriers from the 27-nation bloc's airspace after Jakarta passed a new aviation law, media reports said Thursday.

"There is no further argument for the EU not to lift the ban," Transport Minister Jusman Syafii Djamal was quoted as saying by the Indonesian daily Koran Tempo.

 On Wednesday, the Indonesian parliament passed a bill to improve the country's air safety in response to demands by the EU after Indonesia saw a string of deadly air crashes.

Singapore foreign minister sees likely delay of ASEAN Summit

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit may have to be rescheduled from the February 24-26 date set in Jakarta last week, The Sunday Times reported, citing Singapore Foreign Minister George Yeo."I thought we had settled it in Jakarta a few days ago, but now I'm told that there are some leaders who can't make it," Yeo was quoted as saying.

"There is a certain urgency. We are in the middle of a crisis, and there are some things that we can do to help each other," said Yeo, stressing the immediate need for the group to meet and work out initiatives to face the impact of the ongoing....

Illness floods South

Flooding in the South has led to 27,562 cases of waterborne disease in the past 25 days, the Public Health Ministry said yesterday.

Some 242 mobile medical units had assisted flood victims in Chumphon, Surat Thani, Trang, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat from November 19 to December 14. "Hong Kong foot" accounted for the largest proportion of patients, at 39 per cent, followed by flu at 32 per cent, while 1,900 people suffered severe stress and insomnia, said Public....

Thainox employees protest over benefit cuts

More than 300 employees of Thainox Stainless Plc gathered yesterday to protest over changes to their pay and welfare.

One protester, who used the alias "A", said the firm recently asked all employees to sign new contracts which substantially cut welfare and bonus payments, effective from January 1.

The company also sought to cut their salary by 25 per cent during a suspension of work from Dec 15Jan 15.

Burma plans embassy in Kuwait

Rangoon - Burma's military regime has taken initial steps towards opening an embassy in oil-rich Kuwait as a part of its policy of enhancing diplomatic relations with the Middle East, diplomatic sources said Tuesday.

A high-ranking delegation from the Burmese Foreign Ministry, led by Deputy Minister Maung Myint, recently visited Kuwait for preliminary discussions on the reciprocal opening of embassies in both countries, according to Rangoon-based diplomatic sources.

Burma established diplomatic ties with Kuwait on December 16, 1998. Kuwait was the 73rd country to establish diplomatic ties with Burma....

Malaysian leader proposes anti-corruption, judicial reform bills

Kuala Lumpur - Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi on Wednesday proposed a much-anticipated anti-corruption bill and another bill to restore integrity to the country's judiciary.

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission bill, aimed to take effect in January, was aimed at stamping out corruption in the public and private sectors. Abdullah also proposed an independent judicial body to manage the appointment of judges of superior courts.

 Both bills came amid growing criticism that Abdullah has done little to make good on his pledge to clamp down on corruption....

Border market boost

From December 30 to January 4, the Rong Kleu Market on the border with Cambodia in Sa Kaew province will become a night market, open until midnight, said the provincial governor yesterday.

After that, the market would be open until midnight every Friday and Saturday in a bid to boost Aranyaprathet's economy, said Sanit Naksuksri.

To help make the project a success, the province would promote easier availability of the sevenday border passes that enable the market's mostly Cambodian vendors to operate on the Thai side, he added.

Cheaper psychotropic drugs

Treatment for psychosis will finally become affordable as the National Health Security Office (NHSO) is planning to add two psychotropic drugs - Risperidone and Sertraline - to the national drug list, NHSO secretarygeneral, Dr Winai Swasdivorn, said yesterday

He made the announcement after attending a meeting at which an NHSO subcommittee proposed that these two drugs be added to the national list because their commercial licenses had already expired.

Once the drugs are added to the national list, the Government Pharmaceutical Organisation (GPO) can produce cheaper, generic versions. Winai said antidepressant Sertraline will only cost Bt5 per....

Disease control

The Public Health Ministry will continue trying to control communicable diseases, which have already claimed many lives this year. So far, up to 89 people have died from dengue fever, 69 have succumbed to leptospiro¬sis and three have been killed by streptococcus suis.

"We have closely monitored some major diseases this year and will continue to do so next year," director of the Epidemiology Bureau, Kumnuan Unchusak, said yesterday.

Diseases under watch include dengue fever, lep¬tospirosis, streptococcus suis, measles, mumps, chickenpox, human influenza and pneumo¬nia.

Three candidates for Bangkok governor wooed voters yesterday, with Kaewsan Atibodhi proposing to build two Skytrain extensions, actor-turned-politician Yuranun "Sam" Pamornmontri offering to build new markets and TV personality ML Nattakorn Devakula promising to put up more day-care centres for disabled children. Kaewsan, former Assets Scrutiny Committee secretary and senator, told voters at a public pier near the Sathorn Chaloem Phrakiat 72 Phansa Park that he would speed up the construction of a 2.2-kilometer-long Skytrain extension to Thon Buri side and complete it by next April. Stateless citizens plead for citizenship

Yeed Chaovalit, an old woman from Prachuab Khiri Khan, has given birth to six children but only four are left as the first two sons hanged themselves after years of failing to get Thai citizenship.

Her first son decided to end his life as no employer dared to hire someone stateless. The second son followed suit, as his girlfriend's family rejected him for a similar reason.

Lawyers calls for 'equal

More than 200 poor people have been defendants in land disputes with the government during the past decade, a lawyer revealed yesterday as he called for fair and realistic trials in such cases Lawyer Somneuk Toomsuparp was speaking to a seminar on land disputes from 1997 to 2007, at Chulalongkorn University's Faculty of Political Science.

He urged that in tackling land disputes, the authorities' perspective should change from regarding villagers as foes of the environment to a more realistic view that villagers, with equal rights and dignity, needed to use the land where they resided to make a living.

This view would lower the incidence of land disputes submitted to courts, he said.

WHO braces for dire threats, climate change to global meltdown

Climate change, financial crisis and globalisation are the key global issues related to health now facing the World Health Organisation (WHO) and reflect the major health policies that need to be developed, said the WHO's executive board chairperson, Dr Nimal Siripala de Silva.

Protestors learn to express differences, have better grasp of democracy : study

The Public Health Ministry will study the impact of the recent political demonstrations on the mental health of the participants -- both the anti-government People Alliance for Democracy (PAD) protesters and pro-government supporters, said a senior health official.

The move comes after the PAD announced the end of its siege of Suvarnabhumi Airport and Don Mueang Airport on December 2.

UN urged to obtain freedom of political inmates in Burma

In what is believed to be the first time in history, a large group of parliamentarians from all over Asia have sent a public letter to the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon urging him to obtain the release of all political prisoners from Burma by 31 December 2008.

The letter comes just after a group of 112 former Presidents and Prime Ministers from 50 countries wrote to the Secretary General, also urging him to meet the year-end deadline in travelling to Burma to secure the release of all of the over 2,100 political prisoners in the country.

Noppadon releases book to defend Preah Vihear controversy

Former Foreign minister Noppadon Pattama Friday released his book "I am no traitor" to defend his record relating to the Preah Vihear Temple controversy.

Noppadon resigned his office in July in the wake of a censure debate on his involvement in the Cambodian push to include the ancient temple on the World Heritage List, seen by the opposition as having repercussions on the Thai territorial integrity.

"Facts in my book will show that I am a political victim," Noppadon said.

PM hopes meritmaking will restore unity

Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat said Monday that the government was planning to hold a special meritmaking ceremony early next month to help restore national unity.

Somchai said he wanted to remind Thais about Buddha's teachings and learn that they should not commit sin by causing trouble for other people.

Thaksin to deliver speech at 8 pm Saturday

Former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra's phone-in is scheduled for today at 8.00 pm to address the pro-government crowds at Rajamangala National Stadium, People Power Party MP and organiser Jatuporn Prompan said Friday.

"Thaksin is free to speak out and will not be restricted by topics and time constraints," Jatuporn said.

Army chief orders soldiers to be on alert during weekend

Army Commander-in-Chief Gen Anupong Paochinda has instructed army agencies in Bangkok to be on alert for possible untoward incident during the weekend, the Army spokesman said Friday.

Lao Airlines launches Luang Prabang-Udon Thani route

Lao Airlines on Monday announced the opening of a new route between Luang Prabang, Laos's once royal capital, and Udon Thani, north-east Thailand, radio reports said.

The new route will operate twice a week, every Friday and Sunday, costing 80 dollars one way and 150 dollars round trip, said Radio Laos in a broadcast monitored in Bangkok.

Udon Thani, 450 kilometres north-east of Bangkok, is the closest Thai airport to Vientiane, the Lao capital. It is a major hub for Laos and foreigners living in Laos to catch flights on to Bangkok and abroad.//DPA

Mae Sot hit by floods

Following hours of heavy rain since Friday night, forest floodwater yesterday morning ravaged many areas of Tak's Mae Sot district, including the Muang Mae Sot Municipality where 30,000 residents suffered nearly 1.5-metre-deep flood.With many roads and residential areas submerged, the Mae Sot police station also had to evacuate detainees from its holding cell due to rising water. Local officials were dispatched to aid affected residents with relief bags and help them build sandbag walls.

Many villages in Tambon Phrathat Phadaeng and Tambon Mae Ku were also affected by the downpour-triggered flood and overflows from water....

FM to visit siem reap for border talks

Foreign Minister Sompong Amornwiwat will join his Cambodia counterpart Hor Namhong in Siem Reap on November 12 for another round of talks on resolving the Preah Vihear border dispute.

It would be the third such meeting following the two in July and August between former foreign minister Tej Bunnag and Hor Namhong.

Sompong, who succeeded Tej more than a month ago, would discuss the areas with overlapping claims near the Khmer sanctuaries of Ta Muen Thom and Ta Muen Kwai.

Court permission not required for Samak's treatment in US

Former prime minister Samak Sundaravej has left early this morning for cancer treatment in the United States, according to INN and Matichon reports on Wednesday.

His lawyer said Samak was free to leave the country without having to apply for permission from the high court since his libel conviction was not a serious crime.

Samak was freed on bail by the Appeals Court in September after failing to overturn the lower court's guilty verdict. His case is under the final appellate review by the Supreme Court.

Pro-Thaksin general says more attacks against PAD to be made

Gen Kattiya Sawadiphol, a specialist of the Army, Thursday denied that he was behind the bomb attack against the People's Alliance for Democracy.

But he said the PAD would face more attacks and PAD guards would be killed everyday if the it did not stop occupying the Government House.

"In the future, the PAD may be attacked with RPG rockets, M79 grenades," Kattiya sad.

He said many groups were dissatisfied that the PAD became blatant and armed its guards as well as showing disrespect to many senior persons.

Baht falls to 18-month low

The Thai baht Tuesday fell to an 18-month low of Bt34.9598 against the greenback, prompting the Bank of Thailand (BOT) to step into the market to curb volatility.

The baht opened at Bt34.385 to a dollar before slumping to Bt34.9598, its weakest since April 2007. It closed at Bt34.9093.

A treasury dealer said the baht depreciated in line with other currencies in the region before moving in A narrow range in the afternoon. The central bank apparently stepped into the market to stop the rapid change in the value of the currency.

WHO, Bloomberg Foundation give Thailand Bt33 million

The World Health Organisation (WHO) and Bloomberg Foundation have given Bt33 million to Thailand in a bid to support its 100 per cent smoke free environment project and raise awareness about the dangers of smoking.

Prat was presented the Global Smoke free Partnership 2008 Award-GSP Extraordinary Award at the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco First Asian Regional Conference which is being held in Bangkok from October 28-31.

The award was also presented to the government of Panama, the Inter American Heart Association of Mexico, and Hermant Goswami from India.

Somchai to visit Laos, Vietnam, New Delhi

Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat has tentative plans to visit Laos, Vietnam, India and Peru next month, officials said.

 It is customary for newly appointed prime minister of the region to make visit to neighbouring countries, especially among Asean members.

Earlier plan to pay a visit to Asean earlier this month was scuttled by political instability inside the country.

Besides Laos, Somchai also plans to visit Hanoi on Thursday and Friday next week to attend the third Summit of the Arrawaddy-Chao Phraya-Mekong Economic Cooperation Strategy, a rivers-related regional development forum.
